Lall, City Engineer /Public Works Director Prepared by: Dave Klotrle, Assistant City Engine DATE: February 6, 2009 (CC Meeting of 02/18/09) SUBJECT: Consider Award of Contract for the Construction of the Lassen Avenue Bikeway/Walkway (Project 8074) DISCUSSION A. Background On December 17, 2008, the City Council approved the plans and specifications for the Lassen Avenue Bikeway/Walkway project and authorized staff to advertise for construction bids. B. Project Scope The subject project will construct a straight, 12 -foot wide asphalt path within the unimproved Lassen Avenue right -of -way extending from Moorpark Avenue to Park Lane. The path will include striping, legends, and signs fora 6 -foot wide walkway next to a 6 -foot wide bikeway. A 5 -foot strip of wood chips will be installed on both sides of the paved path. The new path will have connecting ramps to McFadden Avenue and Cornett Avenue. A chain link fence along the south right -of -way line was included in the project design but will be removed from the construction contract. All existing improvements interfering with the construction of the path will be removed or abandoned (e.g. concrete slab, water well and stand pipe). C. Bid Results /Analysis 40 construction firms purchased the plans and specifications. Of that number, twenty - one bids were received and opened on February 3, 2009. The low bidder is Granite Construction, of Watsonville, California. The low bidder possesses the necessary qualifications and experience to perform the work and additionally, is a responsive and responsible bidder.
