City Counc P Meetmv, AC1'10N; MOORPARK CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: Jennifer Mellon, Senior Management Analys;k._ DATE: December 17, 2007 (CC meeting of January 16, 2008) SUBJECT: Consider Authorizing the Moorpark City Library to Submit the California Stories – How I See It Grant Application BACKGROUND The Moorpark City Library strives to offer programs for all ages. Staff looks for opportunities to provide programs that are beneficial to residents and relevant to Moorpark; always looking for ways to implement these programs using alternate funding sources. DISCUSSION Moorpark City Library staff request your consideration to submit a grant application for funds to undertake the "California Stories – How I See It, Moorpark" project. This new program for California libraries sponsored by Califa and the California Council for the Humanities, supported by the California State Library, will provide all the resources librarians need to successfully implement a ten -week digital photography documentary project for teens - activities, equipment, supplies, funds, and training. "California Stories: How I See It" is a new statewide campaign of the California Council for the Humanities that will enable young people to share — in their own words and through a variety of media — what their lives are like, what they care about, and what it's like to grow up in today's California. Through "How I See It," youth will have an opportunity to explore community and personal issues and present their thoughts, ideas, and discoveries to the public. In the process, young people will gain new skills, perspectives, and insights to help them succeed in their lives. The general public, including today's adult decision - makers, will have an opportunity to find out what the youth of our community are thinking — and about the challenges they're facing — through a wide variety of project events, broadcasts, and web -based programs. The deadline to apply is Thursday, January 17, 2008, and decisions will be announced early in February 2008. Programming will occur in summer and fall 2008.
