Traffenstedt, Administrative Services Director /City Clerk -__P57- BY: Maureen Benson, Deputy City Clerk L17abl- DATE: December 21, 2006 (CC Meeting of 01/17/07) SUBJECT: Consider Appointments to the Planning Commission BACKGROUND The Planning Commission consists of five members who serve two -year terms. All five seats on the Planning Commission must be appointed at this time, due to expiration of the two -year term. Applications were due on November 13, 2006, by 5:00 p.m. Eleven (11) applications were received, and a copy of each application was previously provided to the Council for review. Applicants were invited to attend the December 20, 2006, Council meeting for a presentation of qualifications and interest in the appointment. DISCUSSION Following is a list of the applicant names in alphabetical order from those applications received by the close of the filing period: Jay Bauer Kipp Landis Mark DiCecco Larry Miller Theresa Hagman Lawson Thomas Nelson Bruce Hamous Robert Peskay Thomas Henry Mark Taillon Scott Krutilek Of those who applied, the current Planning Commissioners are Mark DiCecco, Kipp Landis, Robert Peskay, and Mark Taillon for the term ending December 2006. Mr. Krutilek has also applied for the Parks and Recreation Commission. 0 OOOti3 Honorable City Council January 17, 2007, Regular Meeting Page 2 The City Council's current Policies Resolution No. 2006 -2483, sets forth the Council policies for citizen appointments to boards, commissions, and committees. The Council policies have been followed for the posting and publication of notice of the vacancies. Chapter 2.36 of the Municipal Code sets forth the regulations for the appointment of the Planning Commission as follows: A. The Mayor shall solicit suggested nominees from members of the Council. B. The Mayor shall make a motion putting forth each individual name to be approved for appointment. C. A second shall be required. D. The Council shall vote on each appointment to the Commission individually. The City Council's Policies Resolution includes an additional step prior to Step B, above, as follows: Prior to making a motion for appointment, the Mayor shall announce the names of all persons he /she intends to nominate, and in the order to be nominated, for a board, commission, or committee. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Appoint five (5) Planning Commissioners to serve a two -year term ending December 31, 2008. 0000<4
