The Honorable City Council
Steven Rueny, City Manager, .
January 3, 1992
SUBJECT: Consider Possible Service Adjustment for Building
and Safety Services
On December 18, 1991, the City Council addressed the issue of
reducing services as part of the same agenda item as the
proposed fee increase. The fee increase has been included as
Item 9.B. on the Agenda.
The Budget and Finance Committee met with Charles Abbott on
December 30, 1991 and reviewed ways to reduce costs. Mr.
Abbott is reviewing the most recent proposal to reduce
services and is expected to reply by January 8. While the
office would remain open eight hours per day, it would only
be staffed by a Clerk with the Inspector available for
limited hours unless service demands, supported by fees,
required more hours. The Building Official would also be
available for limited hours to primarily support the work of
the Clerk and Inspector.
In any event, it appears the Council will need to consider
some amount of General Fund subsidy for the remainder of
1991 -92 and probably into 1992 -93. When the information from
Mr. Abbott becomes available, it will be presented to the
Council.
