At the time, every effort was made to use any existing resources possible to ensure costs were kept to a minimum. Any purchase requests were limited to basic office equipment (ie., cubicle, chairs, refrigerator). Knowing that a computer would be a necessary piece of equipment, city staff requisitioned a six year old IBM 386 computer that was currently not in use and assigned it to the Resource Center. Problem Within a short period of time it became evident the computer was unreliable due to age and internal working problems. On several occasions, the computer has been examined by the city contracted computer specialist. Usually within a couple of days the computer either malfunctions or is simply inoperable. This ongoing problem has resulted in both inefficient productivity and workload capability on the part of the volunteers who staff the Resource Center. Several of the volunteers have computer operations skills that are not being utilized because of this ongoing problem. One of the many responsibilities of the volunteers is to assist the Community Services Officer (CSO) in his role as an educator of crime prevention techniques. This can be accomplished by providing the volunteers with a advanced model computer to allow them to prepare and disseminate crime prevention materials. An updated model computer will also ensure a professional work product at the Resource Center. Recommended Action Staff recommends that the City Council: 1. Authorize the purchase of one 486 computer with a fax/modem for a maximum cost of $5,000. 2. Transfer the purchase price of the computer and the necessary software from the equipment replacement fund (account 31) to the specialized equipment fund (account 01.4.121.906). 00101
