TO: The Honorable City Council
FROM: Ken Gilbert, Director of Public Works
DATE: May 5, 1995 (Meeting of 5-17-95)
SUBJECT: Consider Approval of a Project to Reconstruct the Parkway
Landscaping on the West Side of Spring Road South of
Peach Hill Road
DISCUSSION
Background
At a number of locations, the existing parkway trees on the west
side of Spring Road south of Peach Hill Road have lifted the
sidewalk causing a potential pedestrian safety problem. The
width of the sidewalk in this area is only seven feet (71) wide.
Parkway trees street are not recommended on an arterial street
when the sidewalk/parkway is less than ten feet (101) wide. It
is recommended, therefore, that the fourteen (14) parkway trees
between Peach Hill Road and Monte Vista Park be removed, that the
tree wells filled -in and that a two feet (21) wide landscaped
area be constructed adjacent to the block wall. It is the intent
of staff that the trees to be removed be replaced with a like
number to be planted in Monte Vista Park.
Project Description
Exhibit 'A' shows the location of this project. Also shown is a
cross section illustrating the design for the proposed two feet
(21) wide parkway to be located adjacent to the block wall.
