It provided for one -half cent sales tax dedicated for public safety purposes. The County of Ventura has used it for a variety of programs. Within a few weeks, the Board of Supervisors is expected to consider additional uses for available Proposition 172 funds. A proposal has come forward with the participation of the City Managers and Chiefs of Police to create a Sheriff's Crime Suppression Unit. This unit would be available for deployment in all County cities and the unincorporated area as needed. The program as envisioned would require about $1,000,000 of new Proposition 172 funds. The funds would supplement existing resources of about $464,000. The proposed program would include a dedicated attorney from the District Attorney's office to work directly with the unit. The City Council has previously received a description and estimated budget for the program. Staff has been working with the Sheriff and other cities for several months to refine the proposed program and recommends that the City Council support creating the Crime Suppression Unit. This will provide direct benefit to all residents of the County from the sales taxes generated by Proposition 172. Authorize Mayor to send letter to Board of Supervisors in support of creating the Crime Suppression Unit. C:ccagenda \prop172.rpt ®0011'7
