I"I ' -'/ ITEM 1 % Is AGENDA REPORT City of Moorpark The Honorable City Council Craig Malin, Assistant Planner June 12, 1996 (CC meeting June 19, 1996) 4 Consider request for monument sign on High Street (Heritage Board). The Moorpark Historical Society has proposed placing a monument sign on High Street. Discussion On May 28, 1996, Charles Schwabauer of the Historical Society made a presentation to the Planning Commission requesting approval of a monument sign to commemorate the planting of the historic Pepper Trees on High Street by Robert Poindexter. This sign is proposed to be 6 feet long, with a sign face area 5 feet wide by 3 feet high. The sign letters will be white on a hunter green background, with brown posts. The Commission reviewed the proposed sign at the May 28 meeting. Chairman Torres moved and Commissioner May seconded a motion to recommend to the City Council that the proposed sign be approved. This motion was approved on a 4 - 0 vote with Commissioner Marten absent. The City Council is asked to review the size of the proposed sign, its location, construction, wording and orientation to the street. As proposed, the sign would be considered a large historical marker sign. As an example, the sign on the Moorpark Community Church (historical marker No. 55) located at Charles and Walnut Street is shaped like a map of Ventura County and is 29" x 20 ". The proposed location between the gazebo and the existing driveway (by the fence) has been proposed. The construction as described is substantial. Charles Schwabauer has confirmed that the Historical Society will maintain the sign. The proposed wording is shown in the attachment. It is proposed that the sign be placed perpendicular to High Street so that it can be viewed from the street as well as the sidewalk. The size of the sign is relatively large. Staff feels consideration should be given to approving a smaller size for the sign. Recommendation Approve the sign and location, determine appropriate size of sign.
