Lindley, Director of Community Services DATE: August 8, 1997 (CC Meeting of August 20) ITEM 100s may C- ...._- of Z L) 199-7 – F Y: SUBJECT: Consider Request From Kiwanis of Moorpark to Waive Park Rental Fees for Annual Softball Tournament Executive Summaa The City Council is being asked to consider a request from the Kiwanis of Moorpark to waive park rental fees for its annual Softball Tournament. The fees to be waived include use of three softball fields, softball bases, and equipment used to prepare the fields. Additionally, the Club is also requesting permission to operate temporary concession stands during the tournament. Background The City is in receipt of a letter from the Kiwanis of Moorpark requesting that park rental fees be waived for its annual Men's Slo -Pitch Softball Tournament. The Tournament will be held at Arroyo Vista Community Park and Peach Hill Park on Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7 from approximately 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In the event of rain, the Tournament would be moved to the following weekend, September 13 and 14. The annual Softball Tournament is a major fundraising event for the Kiwanis Club. The proceeds raised from the event go to support a variety of City and community projects throughout the year including the City sponsored Mardi Gras, Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Festival, and high school scholarships, Catch a Star Christmas program, and Teacher of the Year to name a few. In addition, the Kiwanis Club donates many volunteer hours to a number of City sponsored events, most recently the 3rd of July Fireworks Event. The Kiwanis Tournament does not impact any City recreation activities. The City has waived rental fees for the Softball Tournament for the past several years. In the event that ball field lights are needed, Kiwanis would pay the appropriate adopted rental rate. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council approve the request from the Kiwanis of Moorpark to waive park rental fees associated with their annual Men's Slo -Pitch Softball Tournament and grant permission to operate temporary concession stands. LOS ANGELES AVENUE SUITE 108 - 322 MOORPARK, CA 93021 July 14, 1997 Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council Moorpark City Hall 799 Moorpark Avenue Moorpark, CA 93021 Mr. Mayor and Councilmembers: RECEIVED JUL 15 1997 CITY OF MOORPARK The Kiwanis Club of Moorpark is planning it's annual Men's S10-Pitch Softball Tournament for Saturday and Sunday, September 6th and 7th, 1997. We have reserved the use of the softball fields at Arroyo Vista and Peach Hill parks. In the event of rain during the weekend of the 6th and 7th, we have also reserved the softball fields at the same two parks during the following weekend of September 13th and 14th. This tournament is planned as a fund raiser for our organization with proceeds to be used for various projects within our community. As an example, some of the projects we support in Moorpark are the Mardi Gras, Easter, Halloween, Fourth of July, and Community Appreciation Days at Arroyo Vista Park. Additionally, we are very active in Moorpark with many youth projects such as Terrific Kids, high school scholarships, Disabled Students of Moorpark College, and Catch a Star Christmas program. Finally, we are in involved in Teacher of the Year awards, senior center projects, Children's Hospital, Casa Pacifica, and Catholic Charities food distribution program (just to name a few of our community projects). The Kiwanis Club respectfully requests that the City assist us in our endeavor by waiving the rental fees for the use of the fields for the above stated periods. In the event that lights at any of the fields are used, we will pay for such use at the appropriate hourly rate. In addition, may we request the use of field equipment at each of the parks used for both play and upkeep of the facilities. We request permission to operate temporary concession stands at each of the fields during the tournament. We will abide by all city regulations regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the City parks. Although the City Council has approved similar requests from our organization in the past, we certainly do not take for granted the Council's generosity. The Kiwanis Club is very appreciative of your support for our non-profit club and it's projects that benefit Moorpark. Thank you very much for your consideration of our request.
