Ke CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPOR OF MOORPARK, CALIFORNIA City C7/-/ cil Meeting CITY OF MOORPARK of `' _199_,7 ACTON: ( `! 1k ZE%L`-K TO: The Honorable City Council — BY: FROM: Mary K. Lindley, Director of Community Services , DATE: November 13, 1997 (CC Meeting of 11/19/97) SUBJECT: Consider Request to Co- Sponsor Bone Marrow Drive Discussion The City is in receipt of a letter (attachment A) from Mrs. Debra Ryono, president of the Moorpark Rotary Club, requesting that the City consider co- sponsoring a bone marrow drive. The request includes the use of the Community Center, where it is proposed the drive will take place. The drive is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 1998, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This would be the first such bone marrow drive held in Moorpark. The City's rental policy states that only direct costs will be charged for events that are co- sponsored by the City. On Saturdays, the City employs a part -time staff person who can open and close the Community Center for the event within his normally scheduled hours. Additionally, Rotary has agreed to handle the room set -up and take down so that there will be no additional cost for staff time to accommodate this event and no need to waive rental fees. The bone marrow drive has the potential of benefiting the entire community. Therefore, it is staff s belief that this is an appropriate event for the City to assist as a co- sponsor. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council agree to co- sponsor the bone marrow drive with the Moorpark Rotary Club. C ADOCSICOMSERVOONEMARR.AM 0002130 P City Council of Moorpark Nov. 5, 1997 Dear City Council: RECEIVED _ Nov 10 1997 City of Moorpark I'm asking that the Council waive rental fees for the Citrus room at the Community Center on March 7, 1998, for a bone marrow registry drive. The drive would be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There has never been a bone marrow registry drive in Moorpark, and the Rotary Club decided to spearhead one. However, we want this to be a Moorpark event, not a Rotary event. The Moorpark Active Senior Citizens has pledged $1,000 for the testing and the Kiwanis and Fortnightly clubs have indicated they plan to assist. We also will be contacting churches and Moorpark College to help us recruit donors. We could use one of the churches rent free, but there is a particular need for Hispanic and other minority donors, which is why we'd like to have the drive downtown. You might remember our late Mayor Jim Weak died of leukemia. For him, a bone marrow transplant didn't work. For Miss Teen Moorpark Charae Gibbs, a bone marrow transplant (although she was able to use her own marrow) saved her life. Again, we want this to be a Moorpark event, not a Rotary event, and we welcome the city's involvement by letting us use the center rent -free. Sincerely, Debra Ryono Moorpark Rotary president Kidney transplant recipient ()00231
