AC.. c SUBJECT: Consider Transportation and Streets Committee Recommendation to decline to install bus shelters. SUMMARY The City Transportation and Streets Committee met on December 22, 1997. The Committee was previously directed to review the placement of bus shelters at certain stops. Possible sites were discussed in detail, including southbound on Princeton near Campus Park, north bound on Spring near Roberts, and westbound on High Street between Magnolia and Bard. Among the bus shelter issues discussed were: initial cost, maintenance, vandalism, general ridership, activity at certain stops, accessibility, and sidewalk clearance or right of way acquisition. Discussion also included minor deviations to accommodate customers during days of inclement weather. These may include stopping at sheltered spots near the regular stops. Places like this are currently used by riders when the weather is bad. Staff suggested seeing how the new bus handles these types of stops, and waiting for ridership numbers to increase to the point where the installation of bus shelters at the busier stops may be more advantageous. The Committee concluded that it was not the best use of TDA funds to consider the installation of bus shelters at this time. RECOMMENDATION Staff Recommendation: Accept the recommendation of the City Transportation and Streets Committee not to install bus shelters at this time. C:WCIMCC.RMBus Shelters not now.wpd W :'Ar aZ
